Drumroll, please

Say hello to Lucia Socorro Estevez, our latest FO…or, is she the longest-ever WIP?

Born on July 10 at 11:50pm.
7 lbs, 9 oz
19 1/2 inches long
Full head of beautiful, dark hair
She’s absolute perfection.
After the jump, our very long birth story. (I brought my laptop with me to the hospital so I could watch movies, but I ended up writing a ton, instead.) Hope you enjoy.
Yet again, seems I’ve overachieved…

Just got back from the dr.
I’m at 4 cm with steady contractions and “bulging waters.” (that sounds so incredibly gross, no?)
Umm, I’m not even that uncomfortable.
Let’s hope this keeps up.
I got to go home to finish packing the bag, pick up A, and drop Monkey off.
I’m only 37 weeks, so please send lots of healthy baby vibes!
Next time, I’ll be blogging with a new baby in my arms.

I had a midwife appointment this morning. Every appointment starts the same way - I get my blood pressure taken, get weighed, then I go through the nearly-impossible task of peeing in this teeny-tiny cup so they can test for proteins and UTIs and determine how well I can aim my pee into said cup when I can’t see what the hell I’m doing thanks to the bump that continues to consume the front half of me.
After all that fun stuff, I got swabbed for Group B strep. Never mind that the last thing my cervix wants right now is someone coming in with a 12-inch long q-tip to poke around in there. I’ve been having contractions for the past week and half or so. Every night, without fail, I sit and try to relax only to have my evenings interrupted every half hour by a contraction. This lasts about 3 or 4 hours. It’s exactly what happened with Monkey, and she was two weeks early. So, I’m laying there on the table, legs all up in stirrups (giddyup!), counting the holes in the ceiling tiles, when the midwife pops her head up and asks, “Have you been having pains?”
“Yes, some. Why?”
“You’re a good 2 cm dilated.”
TWO! Now, for all of you naysayers out there, I know that I can walk around like this for weeks (WEEKS!), but I’m looking at the silver lining here. At 2 cm, that means that I’m that much closer to 10. Only 80% more to go. Right now, as I sit here with my cramps, sore back, and ridiculously swollen foot (oddly, only my right is swollen, which A finds pretty funny. He calls it my mutant foot and likes to poke it to watch it bounce back. We’ll see how funny it is when I shove my mutant foot up his you-know-what), I’ve decided to take comfort in knowing that my body is slowly but surely getting ready to present the little one with an eviction notice. An eviction notice that will let me, finally, sleep on my back again, drink a beer with dinner, and, hopefully sooner rather than later, let me get back to running. Oh, and hug the Monkey and Big A without having to move sideways to do it.

I’ve also decided to celebrate by treating myself to an evening of chilling and relaxing. I’ve been trying to work at least an hour and a half every evening on my thesis. This mostly means reading lots and lots of depressing data on children and war and other horrible articles. But, I figure I’d rather get it done now while I can, you know?
Big A is away at band practice tonight (he’s left me with strict instructions to NOT BIRTH OUR BABY TONIGHT. I will try my best to oblige.) Therefore, tonight I’ll be living la vida loca with my knittng and some hulu. I’m such an animal.

This, in progress.
I also have a few FOs to share. They’re blocked, but in need of buttons. I’ve been too lazy/busy/hot/swollen/cranky to get mine arse over to the button store. Maybe tomorrow…or, maybe I’ll decide to go to the pool instead and soak my mutant foot for a few hours.
Slippery slope?

Me: I’m 35 weeks today.
A: Yay!
Me: I just realized that while I was in the shower.
A: Wait…so, what does that mean?
Me: It means that in a few weeks, a screaming human being will come careening out of my vagina.
A: You should think of it as a tobaggon ride for small people, instead.
Good times, thank you.

The movers come in three days, packing is about 2/3 done, and I’m starting to feel a little freaked out about the whole move. But, it’s still been an incredible few days.
Things that have made the past few days fucking amazing:
1) Big A’s mom is here visiting for a few days. We’ve been clicking, and bonding, and she accompanied me to my midwife appointment today, so she got to hear her first grandbaby’s heartbeat. I’m glad I was able to do that for her. (Oh, and the baby is doing GREAT. She’s head-down already, in prime eviction position. I discussed my plans for a natural drug-free birth with my midwife. I just asked her about the hospital’s policy on fetal monitoring - I want intermittent - and she went on this whole tirade about how she’s all for minimal intervention and that she’s just there to listen to the mom and baby, and that she’s all for me eating and not getting an IV and not being confined to the bed…ahh, be still my heart. I’m in love with my midwife.)
2) Big A’s birthday is tomorrow. Since his momma leaves tomorrow afternoon, we had dinner tonight at a fantastic local French restaurant (if you live in Brooklyn, do yourself a favor and treat yourself to some of the most delicious, best-priced French food around. It beats the other Park Slope French bistros, hands down.)
But, the best thing, the one that has the others beat:
3) The amazing amount of lurve I’ve been feeling from this group of ladies. Seriously, you guys are so incredibly sneaky and fabulous. Words can’t express how thankful I am for your thoughtful gifts. All that effort, all that caring - and I’ve only met a few of them in real life. The Internets is a beautiful place. I’m so grateful for this little community of friends that I’ve managed to form thanks to my humble little blog. You all get a big, wet, sloppy kiss from me.
